Frequently Asked Questions
Don't see your question below? Feel free to contact us directly.
How does Lanterns differ from a counselling or therapy program?
Lanterns is a peer support group, it is not counselling or therapy. Groups are led by facilitators who are adult volunteers who are trained by a Lanterns registered director, screened, and chosen by site administration to be caring listeners.
How are participants grouped?
They are organized in small groups of five to seven, matched by similar age and similar type of loss. Our groups are Firefly (ages 6 to 12), Embers (ages 13 to 16), and an adult group.
Will similarly aged siblings be in the same group?
Siblings are usually placed in separate groups. This helps each child or teen experience and explore his/her own issues.
When are these programs offered?
Our program runs twice a year, with 10-week sessions from September through November and from January through March. Sessions are held Thursdays from 6:30 to 7:30 PM.
Do I need a referral?
No. You may refer yourself, your child(ren) or teen(s) by contacting us directly.
Is there a fee to register?
No. All of our programs — Firefly, Embers and Adults — are offered free of charge. Lanterns is funded by donations from the public.
Where are sessions held? Is Lanterns a religious program?
Sessions are held at St. Mary's School, 1088 Gillett St in Prince George. Lanterns is a non-sectarian organization and welcomes children, youth and families of any faith or beliefs.
How can I volunteer?
Every group is led by two trained adult volunteer facilitators, and we are always looking for more. Facilitators are screened and trained by a Lanterns registered director — no counselling background is required, just a willingness to listen without judgement. Contact us to learn more.
What happens at the final session?
The last night of each session is a Celebration, where participants and their families mark the end of the program together.
